Follow these steps to configure and integrate GENEX DairySuite with VAS and provide consultants view-only access to your herd data in PULSE.

For the most accurate and comprehensive herd analysis, be sure to add parentage details for the animals in your herd. VAS recommends adding the data for all animals for the following standard PULSE/DairyComp 305 items: 

This data is used to assess the herd's genomic profile and is the basis of calculations made for specific animal traits and potential improvements.

The breed average is also incorporated into the assessment calculations, but having specific parentage data for the animals in your herd greatly increases the accuracy of the analysis process:

Step 3: Work with Your Genetics Consultant to Build a Genetic Plan

Once the data connection is active, your genetic consultant will contact you to begin reviewing your herd's genomic data and analyzing options to improve specific genomic traits of your herd. You will work together to customize and implement the plan, which includes sire selection and animal mating recommendations based on your genetic goals.

When this breeding is entered in DairyComp the animal remains pregnant, but this flag is set so that the veterinarian can determine if she is still pregnant to the original breeding or if she has aborted and is now just another "bred status" cow.

Mastitis is the persistent, inflammatory reaction of the udder tissue due to physical trauma or infection. Symptoms of mastitis include udder swelling, heat, hardness, redness, or pain. The milk may have a watery appearance, flakes, clots, or pus.

Ketosis is a common ailment that usually occurs in early lactation, when the energy demands of milk production are very high and the cow metabolizes fat stores for energy. Symptoms of ketosis may include reduced milk yield, weight loss, reduced appetite, acetone smell of breath and/or milk, and fever.

Milk fever is a disease characterized by reduced blood calcium levels. It occurs in early lactation, when demand for calcium for colostrum and milk production exceeds the cow's ability to mobilize calcium. "Fever" is a misnomer, as body temperature during the disease is generally not elevated. Milk fever symptoms include tremor in the muscles of the head and limbs until falling to a "sitting" position. Once down, cows may have a dry muzzle, staring eyes, cold legs and ears, constipation, and drowsiness.

Displaced abomasum in cattle occurs when the abomasum, also known as the true stomach, which typically resides on the floor of the abdomen, fills with gas and rises to the top of the abdomen, where it is said to be "displaced".
